![]() Unlike urban environments that have objects with neat edges and distinct occlusion lines (you can’t see around a building blocking 30% of the view when you are close by, for example) forests are very complex. The challenges with recreating nature are mostly due to its complexity. The complex forest in Riverhead, where this tutorial is based Spatially Accuray Procedural Generation. There are several parts to this tutorial, so here are some helpful bookmarks ![]() ![]() However, there are real benefits that can be gained from attempting to recreate forests digitally: we can convey the effects of biosecurity (what if every native tree was gone?), understand impacts potential change (what if we harvested all the trees in this area?), and provide moments of calm, for those that might not otherwise have access to nature. I value my time outside, away from the built environment, in disconnected spaces. The complexity of forests is a nightmare to try and relate digitally and to a certain effect, I kind of like it that way. In the last couple of years I’ve been learning how hard making digital twins of real world forests are.
